- Batik is an Orential fabric patterned by a wax reserve process in which every part of the suface is covered with a coating of wax except where a given color is desired in the pattern. It is then dyed, the coated surface remaining untouched by the dye, the exposed parts receiving the color. The wax is then removed and again applied, leaving other parts exposed to the dye. This process is repeated for every color. In India this technique dates back to the VIIIth Century.
